April picked up her first pair of drum sticks when she was five years old. When she was eleven, she began taking private drum lessons while simultaneously playing cornet in the school band. By fourteen, she had switched from cornet to french horn, all along still playing drums outside of school. With her brother Todd on guitar, she jammed in several garage bands (Us, Fantasia, and Parallex) until about 1988. In that same year, she began playing in several garage bands (Desert Pelican, Bad Attitude) and then she exploded on to the club scene with 1OO Proof. She played her first ever club gig in 1989 at The Library in Denton, TX. During this time, she also attended the University of North Texas, majoring in Music. Will playing in 100 Proof she also performed with Tragic Hero and played with friends, Mirror Image. After the demise of 1OO Proof in 1991, she formed the band Freeloader, later known as Sloe Gin, featuring Jeff Blair, formerly of Aristaya. After the break up of Sloe Gin in 1992, she helped form the band East of Eden. East of Eden continued to play around Texas until 1995. A year and a half later, she helped form Frognot which featured former Pulp Society vocalist Dennis Leonard, former 100 Proof guitarist Ken Allen, and brother Todd Samuels. In the evenings, after Frognot rehearsal, April recorded a full-length album with friend and fellow musician Matt Johnson for his solo release. April met BJH bandmates Tiffany Poinsett and Derenda Hawkins (both then of the Deadbeats) when the Deadbeats and Frognot played a show together in 1998.

April performs with Aschere and Cherry Blossom Clinic, is the owner of 100 Proof Entertainment, a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), a member of GoGirls Elite, and is endorsed by Silverfox Percussion. April also volunteers for the New Beginning Center.
